Exciting New Technology

RF Applications, Inc. VFD Series Watt meters represent breakthroughs in microprocessor, display and software technology. These units feature a 2 line by 16 character vacuum fluorescent display, tuning and operate modes, and a settable V.S.W.R. alarm limit. With our VFD External Relay Option, you can use this instrument to interrupt your transmit control circuitry to protect your valuable station equipment in high V.S.W.R. conditions (wrong antenna, bad cable, ice, etc.).

Housed in a compact (5.75" by 3.0" by 2.0") enclosure, the VFD Series Watt meters offer many features you cannot find anywhere else. The VFD Watt meters use our "battle proven" remote sensor design being used around the world today. All this at a price you can afford.

Information You Need

The VFD’s display holds your peak PEP for about two seconds after you stop transmitting. The 65 element bar graph updates instantaneously, making tune-up a snap (actually better than using a meter.) You can select "TUNE" mode for faster updates on the digital readout for additional tuning ease.

The Best Sensor

We use large ferrite cores that will not saturate at legal power levels.  Shielding between the two cores is provided by a spot-welded plate on the cover of the sensor.

Is It Accurate?

Compare it side by side with your Bird (or other quality) wattmeter. You’ll be amazed how accurate it is.  10%

Here’s what you’ll see if you have a VSWR alarm condition

V.S.W.R. Alarm Relay Option

This feature adds a reed relay output to the VFD that you can use to inhibit a radio or amplifier when your preset V.S.W.R. limit is exceeded.  It is self resetting when all RF power is removed for more than two seconds.  The relay contact can switch 500 milliamps and carry 1 amp, up to 24 VDC or AC.  The contact is normally closed, opening when the VFD detects a V.S.W.R. problem (or the VFD itself is off.)

Power Monitor Option

The Power Monitor Option allows your VFD to monitor your transmitted power and gives you relay contacts to let you know that you are applying RF to an antenna.  Using supplied jumpers, you can set up this option to do the following:

bulletProvide a SPDT contact than indicates power above 25 watts present
bulletProvide a SPST contact that opens when above 25 watts and provide a SPST contact that closes when above 25, 90, 190, or 1400 watts
bulletProgram the relay output to act almost instantly or delay for 2 seconds when RF is removed

This option is very useful for interlocking multi-radio installation and to provide an external indicating light to let the station operator know that the transmit power is greater than the preset level.  "Is that amplifier enabled and working properly?" is automatically answered!
