Single-Wire Single-Direction Beverage Antenna System

Model SWSD-1

Introduction

The SWSD-1 is a single-wire, single direction Beverage Antenna System. The SWSD-1 consists of a receiver matching transformer assembly, and a 10-watt non-inductive termination resistor assembly.  Both the matching transformer and termination assemblies are designed to mount to a 1” OD galvanized water pipe available from any home improvement store.  For improved grounding, there are provisions to connect both assemblies to separate ground rods as well.  The SWSD-1 interfaces to your receiver via standard 50-ohm cable.

Unlike other systems, this is a complete water tight solution ready to install since it includes the watertight boxes, and mounting system that also serves as the ground connection.  It also includes two choices of impedances so you can correctly match a wire close to the ground as well as wires that are 8-10 feet above ground, this means your feedline will not have VSWR on it which can be a problem and allow signal pickup.  Compare, our quality, finish, and larger replaceable termination resistor and you will be amazed at the ease of use, even in harsh environments, which means reliability for life. We also use standard SO239 connectors over clumsy and flimsy type-F,  for reliability and you can use 50 ohm or 75 ohm CATV if you wish as feed systems.  The transformer will match either impedances with equally high performance.

See a Demo on YouTube of our Beverage system.

Specifications

·        1.8-30 MHz operation

·        Transformer assembly gas discharge tubes minimize lightning damage

·        450 Ω and 350 Ω antenna impedance interfaces for optimum operation , and allows use of either 50 ohm or 75 ohm feedlines.

·        10-watt termination resistors for improved lightning susceptibility

·        Rugged NEMA 4X housing for long-life - harsh environment rated!

·        U-bolt mounting assembly for easy installation

·        50 ohm or 75 ohm coaxial cable feed system

·        SWR under 1.1 from 1.5-14MHz  and 1.2 to 30 MHz   ( Low VSWR means no feedline pickup)

HOW MUCH LOSS?  Poorly made transformers can steal up to 30% of your receive signal.

0.25dB insertion loss measured by VNA , see plots below

Measured VSWR from 1 to 16MHz

Transformer insertion Loss ( .25db ) through one transformer as shown below.

The above graph is done with two Beverage transformers set up back to back. the loss numbers of approx .5 dB mean is for two transformers,  one transformer has .25 dB of loss. from 1.5 to over 16MHz.

Components Required But Not Supplied

·        Two 1”OD x 4’(minimum) galvanized water pipes for mounting, or ground rods

·        Antenna wire

·        Insulators and supports to support the antenna wire 5 to 10 feet above ground.

Installation

Both the matching transformer and the terminating resistor assemblies are designed to be mounted to a 1”OD galvanized pipe that can simply be pounded into the ground.  The typical installation is shown below:

For optimum antenna matching, two impedance interfaces are provided on the SWSD-1 Beverage Transformer and Termination assemblies.  Antenna heights of 3-4 feet will work best with the 350 ohm impedance interface.  The more typical Beverage antenna height of 8-10 feet will work best with the 450 ohm impedance interface.   In all cases, you will need to provide insulated antenna supports along the antenna run.  When the antenna system has been installed, it can be simply tested using an antenna analyzer connected to the SO-239 connector on the Beverage Transformer assembly.  You should see a relatively constant SWR across your frequency bands of interest.  Finally, the SWSD-1, like any other Beverage antenna system, is designed as a receiving antenna.  Do not transmit into the SWSD-1 with more than 10-watts (the power rating of the terminating resistor assembly).

Very clean and complete design.

No PCB to get burnt up from lightning strikes nearby, real Gas Discharge tubes for  added lightning protection,  Isolated windings on transformer, 10 watt resistors, probably can take 1kW of Peak Lightning power, galvanic correct metals to prevent corrosion throught, Ground buss to connected to U-Bolt plate as well as a stainless steel bolt to make grounding the antenna easy, fast, and strong.  There are tabs on the box to strain relief the Beverage Antenna wire as well.  NEMA 4X rated harsh environment boxes.
